The Rev Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech 50 years ago today although standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. But it’s the Washington Monument that cast the most indelible architectural impression that day, soaring skyward at the opposite finish of the National Mall, mirrored in the reflecting pool under, anchoring the sight of a quarter million people assembled to hear Dr. King’s words. Those who gathered in Washington right now to commemorate that seminal civil rights moment took to Instagram to record their impressions, and, not surprisingly, it’s the monolithic Monument, when much more, that took center stage.
